Kwasy tłuszczowe omega-3, w które obfitują tłuste ryby, takie jak łosoś, makrela czy tuńczyk, zwiększają objętość istoty szarej w tych obszarach mózgu, które odpowiadają za nastrój i zachowanie – zaobserwowali naukowcy z USA.

Zdaniem autorów badań, o których informuje serwis internetowy „EurekAlert”, odkrycie to pomoże zrozumieć, na czym polega przeciwdepresyjne działanie kwasów omega-3.

Jak dowodzą liczne badania, kwasy tłuszczowe omega-3 mają bardzo pozytywny wpływ na ludzkie zdrowie. Obniżają m.in. poziom cholesterolu, przez co pomagają utrzymać zdrowe serce i układ krążenia, mogą też chronić przed innymi chorobami o podłożu zapalnym, jak zapalenie stawów, toczeń układowy czy astma. Ich bogatym źródłem są tłuste ryby morskie – tuńczyk, łosoś, śledź, sardynki i makrela.

Naukowcy obserwowali ponadto, że omega-3 mogą regulować nastrój. Na przykład osoby, których dieta jest uboga w tłuszcze rybie i które mają niski poziom kwasów omega-3 we krwi, są często negatywnie nastawione do rzeczywistości i skłonne do zaburzeń nastroju, w tym depresji czy reakcji impulsywnych. Z drugiej strony, ci, którzy mają wyższe stężenie omega-3 we krwi, są przyjaźnie nastawieni do świata i mniej podatni na depresję.

Najnowsza praca badaczy z Uniwersytetu w Pittsburgu pozwala lepiej zrozumieć mechanizm, który odpowiada za przeciwdepresyjne działanie omega-3.

W doświadczeniu udział wzięło 55 zdrowych osób. Zebrano informacje na temat ilości spożywanych przez pacjentów długołańcuchowych tłuszczów omega-3. Objętość istoty szarej mózgu (czyli kory mózgu) każdego pacjenta oceniano w badaniu z użyciem techniki tzw. strukturalnego rezonansu magnetycznego o dużej rozdzielczości.

Okazało się, że osoby, których dieta była bogata w długołańcuchowe kwasy omega-3, miały też większą objętość istoty szarej w strukturach mózgu odpowiedzialnych za emocje i nastrój, takich jak kora tylnego zakrętu obręczy, prawe jądro migdałowate i prawy hipokamp. Właśnie w tych obszarach u pacjentów z zaburzeniami nastroju, np. poważną odmianą depresji – tzw. dużą depresją, obserwuje się redukcję istoty szarej, przypominają autorzy pracy.

Zdaniem biorącej udział w badaniach dr Sarah M. Conklin, wyniki te sugerują, że dieta bogata w tłuszcze rybie wpływa wpływają korzystnie na strukturę obszarów mózgu związanych z regulacją nastroju i pobudzeniem emocjonalnym. Badaczka zaznacza jednak, że aby potwierdzić to odkrycie trzeba będzie przeprowadzić znacznie więcej badań.

Naukowcy poinformowali o wynikach swoich badań na dorocznym spotkaniu American Psychosomatic Society , które odbywa się w Budapeszcie.

To raczej uwaga do Onet.pl, gdzie jest tekst źródłowy.
